Death and dying
Today I was reminded of this process in life we call Death. An old friend of mine commented on her blog that her mother died recently. This brought my mind back to the not so distant experience of watching my father die. My dad was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma some 10 years ago. His life that I observed from his diagnosis until his death is what I would call the process of dying, and everyone is apart of it.

You see, my father lived a pretty good life pre-cancer. However, after he found out he had cancer, he really began to live. My mother and father began taking trips and vacations. My father began to pour all of his efforts into positively influencing the lives around him. He lived like each day might be his last. He rallied friends and family to focus more on living life and less on their problems. This is part of the process of dying; this kind of focus on living.

Then of course there is the actual process of dying; those last months in bed. What a painful time that is for everyone. Family and friends feel so helpless. There is nothing beyond support that you can do for someone who is sick. What I found in those painful last months, as I tried to identify feelings and emotions I had never experienced, is that death is really a very peculiar experience. It’s an experience that is very rare to most people. Death touches the lives of all those involved in a painful way, and without them knowing, in a way that adds to one of life’s greatest joys; it’s adventure.

Walking the green mile
Photo of Sunset in downtown Salem OregonFrequently I go for walks to try and stay active since I haven’t been able to play soccer or racquetball. My walks are usually about a mile or so. This time of year in the downtown area, walks are most pleasant with all the greenery. The other day I decided to take some random pictures on my walk using my Canon PowerShot SD630. I walk in about a 12 block radius from my house.

This first shot is looking downtown toward the waterfront as the sun is setting. I love seeing the sun set over the city. If only my house sat on a hill to have this view.

Photo of Capitol park in Salem OregonFurther on my walk I travel along the capitol parks. Something about this picture I like is the way the rows of trees run parallel to the rows of parking meters. Is there a law against clear-cutting rows of parking meters? I wonder about the comparison of the value of a parking meter to the value of a tree? BTW, I am not against clear cutting.

Photo of State Capitol building in Salem OregonThis next picture is a side view of our state capitol looking through one of the parks. I only took a side shot since I did not actually pass in front of the capitol on this walk. An interesting thing that comes to mind is that I see the capitol building probably every single day. Yet most people probably never see a capitol building unless in a book or on TV. I wonder if I take this for granted or if it’s really no big deal.

Uploaded new photos of Sawyer
Baby picture of SawyerI have added 16 new photos of Sawyer to my photo albums. I have been quite busy and not taken time to update the photo albums. Sawyer is doing well. She is growing very fast and changing what seems daily. She is becoming more of a joy to be around as she smiles and coos at us. We had great struggles trying to get her to drink from a bottle. We consulted friends and the internet extensively. Finally after a lot of patience and persistance, we were able to get her drinking from the bottle. This will make things much easier on Amy when she goes back to work. Otherwise she would have had to have her mom bring Sawyer to her work every 3-4 hours.

Funny and not so funny
I'm sitting at my computer working yesterday evening and my wife is walking around burping the baby. My wife decides our baby looks really cute and wants to give daddy a kiss. She walks over and puts the baby's lips up to my cheek while I'm still completely absorbed in my work. What I thought was the sound of my little girl giving me a kiss (as if at 7 weeks old) was actually the sound of her spitting up inside my ear, all over my cheek, and down my neck and shoulder. I could only laugh at the humor of it.

What's in a pair of shoes
What's in a pair of shoes depends on what you get out of them. For women it may be emotional comfort associated with a perceived elevation in their self image. But for a man it might be a sense of confidence heading into a tough business meeting. And for an athlete it could very well speed their step because they know they're wearing a better shoe.

Today we were able to leave our 6 week old daughter with my mom so we could go shopping at the Woodburn Company Stores. This was a real treat for my wife and I. We got her a couple outfits at Banana Republic and me a delicious espresso and cream at Javacrew.

I wanted to buy something too since we had been given this opportunity to go shopping and be away from the baby for a while. I thought about shoes and headed over to the Bass store. Bass Shoes I noticed several pairs of shoes I liked, but was keenly aware of all the shoes I already own. Knowing I may only where a pair of dress shoes like these twice a year I went ahead and purchased them. With no remorse I must add.

While driving home I thought about my new shoes and the money I had just spent on them. The money didn't matter as much as what I got out of the shoes. What I got was an hour and a half of freedom, from crying, dirty diapers, and worrying about waking the baby. I also got an hour and half of time with my wife that I didn't have to share with anyone else. I'd pay for that again.

Hawaii getaway
I needed to get away to recoup and take a break. Unfortunately I had too much work to do and would have to take my laptop with me and work evenings. Regardless I would be looking forward to sun, warmth, and fun that would be found in Hawaii. Sunset in Hawaii I scheduled our trip 9 days in advance and the day we flew out we had unusual weather for March, snow. Perfect timing to be headed to Hawaii. Let's shorten this story up in great measure. After enjoying some boarding, snorkeling, and kayaking, I spent the rest of the trip taking care of my wife who began suffering from the flu on day 2. The point of the story is coming.

What would seem to be a ruined trip to Hawaii, spending every day watching your wife suffer in bed, while frequently leaving to pick up an assortment of food from local restaurants hoping she would be able to eat something, actually became a blessing of sorts. It allowed me an opportunity to give my complete selfless focus to my wife and remember how good that feels. As a career and hobbyist developer it is very easy to always be thinking about code, projects, and the latest discovery in the world of development. Often times I find myself absorbed in a project for days without end. For those of you who are married, and wish to be for life, finding or making time where your thoughts and attention is focused on your spouse is as important as a tune up to the car. Leave your computer at home and go away for the weekend. Do something, anything; you'll be glad you did.
