ASP.NET 2.0 Web Parts
I was searching around for some information about ASP.NET 2.0 and came across an article about ASP.NET 2.0 Web Parts. Until now, I had somehow not heard of Web Parts. Web Parts is a set of controls and functionality to personalize the experience of users on your website. Here are a few good links to learn more about it.

Wow! I'm really surprised you didn't know about these. Pretty much the same as a DNN module, probably easier on the development process but harder on the deployment (in most cases). Also with DNN modules you can append in runtime, so no downtime unlike major web part implementations requiring database modifications. I was reading this article today, which I found really interesting; note the part about using web parts in custom asp.net applications and then note the comments left regarding this too. http://weblogs.asp.net/bsimser/archive/2006/01/31/437023.aspx
